As for the amplifier, the K7 applies the THX AAA 788+ circuit design that was designed for desktop device headphone amps. These THX amps are well known for being linear, with incredibly clean, distortion free output, rewriting the rules about how low distortion can be pushed in affordable headphone amps. 

Under a 300Ω load at 1% distortion of each channel, it is capable of outputting 560mW, and 2000mW into a 32Ω load at 1% distortion of each channel.

What do these power numbers mean? 

In practice, this is ample power to get great results and have enough headroom for the vast majority of specialist headphones. 150, 250 & 300 ohm headphones will match well and low sensitivity planar models - these sneaky ones that are 32 ohm but have very low sensitivity ratings, making them really tough to power - perform excellent with this amp design, as it has enough current to drive these headphones cleanly.

As for the DAC, its left and right channels are each equipped with AKM's highly regarded AK4493SEQ DAC chip, for classic high-quality audio and warm sound. This DAC tuning nicely compliments the clarity of the THX amp, keeping the body in the music and staying away from becoming too lean sounding. 

FiiO K7 features a power design consisting of multiple independent stages, with the voltage of each stage being regulated by low-noise LDOs. Feeding this power design is an external 12V switching power supply - the power brick.

FiiO K7 features an all-aluminum alloy construction, carefully finished with CNC and other processes. The RGB Sample Rate Indicator - the light ring glowing behind the volume dial - indicates the bitrate of the music.

This is handy when connected to a PC or macbook, so you can confirm that the computer's software isn't dumbing down the music's bitrate and is properly outputting the full file. With some software settings this can easily happen, so its a nice touch having this light on the K7 to confirm that it is receiving what you expect from your Spofity Lossless or Apple Music Lossless streaming.

FAQ: Why choose the FiiO K7 vs K11? 

In our experience using these DACs, for 300 ohm headphones like the HD6XX or especially the less efficient HD600, the K7 has more output and more headroom, so it can better drive these 300 ohm load headphones. Here are some relevant numbers: 300 ohm, balanced 4.4mm jack, the K11 = 250mW vs K7 = 560mW. With SE 6.35mm jack, K11 = 60mW vs K7 120mW.

For lower impedance, 16 - 80 ohm model headphones, like FiiO, Meze and planar magnetic models, both the K11 and K7 have sufficient power for linear, low distortion playback.

Also, if you have powered speakers connected to the line out, having the front toggle switch is pretty handy. You can just flick from speakers to headphones (Pre to PO)
